Never had a problem with Win7, this is horrendous, wont be long before I take a hammer to this rubbish! I'm also not an IT pro so my suggestions, but i'll do my best here to help you since I finally got it to work on my machine. Took forever though. I finally got my PC to install win8.

That was my goal. I had to do way too much in order to get there though and it took way, way too long. Sorry I don't remember the exact numbers of the updates. You want to uninstall those updates. They prevent updates from being installed for some reason. I had read this tip at another forum. Noone from Microsoft has suggested to uninstall any patches.

Edit msconfig and turn off all 3rd party services. Something might be causing the conflict. This way you should only have Microsoft services after you restart. Run the windows update diagnostic tool and then afterwards restart the computer. I had run those a few times without rebooting and it appeared that the updates were installing but in reality they were not.
